Today is the second day of the mHealth Summit in Washington DC. The largest event of its kind, the summit brings together leaders in government, the private sector, industry, academia, providers and not-for-profit organizations from across the mobile health ecosystem to “advance collaboration in the use of wireless technology to improve health outcomes in the United States and abroad.” If you’re unable to attend the summit, you can watch videos from most of the sessions online, including Secretary Sebelius’ keynote address hashtag on Twitter.

“There are more wireless devices being used in the U.S. than there are people (CTIA, 2011Exit Disclaimer)! Over 50% of U.S. adults are using wireless devices, such as cell phones, to access the internet, with 78% of wireless device users searching online for health information (Pew Internet and American Life Project, 2010Exit Disclaimer (PDF 850KB)),” said Audie Atienza , Senior Health Technology Adviser to HHS in a recent blog post, Three Approaches to mHealth. In his other post, Complexities and Challenges in Developing mHealth Programs, he points to resources to help staff better understand key issues related to mHealth.

We asked Carol Crawford, Chief of Electronic Media at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), what questions organizations should be asking themselves about mobile: “They should be thinking about what content they currently have available that is likely to be needed on mobile devices...and how it can be shortened or abbreviated so it is accessible on a mobile device.”We’ll be following up next week with a blog post from the summit. In the meantime, we encourage you to follow the conversation online (or on your phone!)
