National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is a significant opportunity to reach people who may not be aware of the importance of knowing their HIV status.

This year’s National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) communication is happening in the context of the recent release of Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America. The plan emphasizes the importance of HIV testing: “Early detection is critical and can lead to quicker results in treatment and prevent transmission to others.”

To support HIV testing and diagnosis and Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America, we offer NHTD 2019 communication resources now available for your use.

Find HIV Testing

Here are three ways to help your audiences find HIV testing services:

• With the HIV Testing Sites & Care Services Locator your audience can find an HIV test and services for mental health, substance use, housing, family planning, etc. We offer a widget and instructions on how to add the Locator to your site.
• Visit gettested.cdc.gov.
• Call 1-800-CDC-INFO (232-4636).

Theme

This year’s NHTD theme is “Doing It My Way.” CDC selects this theme for federal agency use and encourages other stakeholders and community partners to use it too. Why this theme? It focuses on the importance of HIV testing and emphasizes that individuals can choose how, when, and where to test.

HIV.gov’s NHTD Page: Logo and More

The NHTD logo is available on the HIV.gov NHTD page. This page also provides communication resources from across the federal government and from the community. For example, we include resources from Greater than AIDSExit Disclaimer, and offer news about events such as the National Hispanic Medical Association's Twitter chatExit Disclaimer (@NHMAmd) to be held June 27. We will update our NHTD page regularly in June.

Visuals for HIV Awareness

Images in our HIV Basics section are available for re-use. Our content and images address questions such as: Who should get tested? What can you expect when you go in for an HIV test? What does a negative HIV test result mean? What does a positive HIV test result mean?

Video and Stories

HIV.gov and CDC have videos for your use. Positive Spin is a set of stories and videos that speak to the importance of knowing one’s HIV status and getting and staying in care. CDC’s Doing It campaign has produced a suite of videos with personal stories about HIV testing.

Toolkit

CDC offers a comprehensive NHTD toolkit reiterating the importance of HIV testing. The graphics, sample social media, and fact sheets reflect the look and year-round messages of the Doing It campaign that emphasizes the importance of HIV testing for all people ages 18 to 64 and encourages all adults to get tested for HIV.
