Previous National HIV/AIDS Strategies
The United States’ first coordinated national HIV strategy was released in 2010 and updated in 2015. First released on July 13, 2010, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) identified a set of priorities and strategic action steps tied to measurable outcomes to guide the collective national response to the domestic HIV epidemic. Then, in July 2015, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States: Updated to 2020 was released.
Over that decade, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) changed the way that Americans talked about HIV, prioritized and coordinated resources, and delivered prevention and care services along with other clinical and nonclinical services to support people with HIV or at risk for HIV. The NHAS also led to increased collaboration among federal agencies; people with or at risk for HIV; state, local, and tribal governments; health care providers; researchers; faith communities; and many other community partners and stakeholders.
The current HIV National Strategic Plan (HIV Plan) updates the national HIV strategy for 2021–2025. The HIV Plan builds on the progress achieved and lessons learned from the previous iterations and seeks to leverage new opportunities and address the challenges that remain.
