Across many years of observing National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day, the Latino Commission on AIDS and its partners in the HIV community have communicated widely about the importance of HIV prevention, care, and treatment.

This year’s observance on October 15th is happening in a new context. The Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America initiative provides an important new framework for HIV/AIDS Awareness Days and offers additional support for NLAAD’s long-time goals.

Local Events

Today we highlight a few creative local NLAAD events and let you know where to find more:

Fort Lauderdale Promotes HIV Testing and Prevention

On October 4th, NLAAD supporters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, hosted a Hispanic Heritage Food Bazaar—offering food sampling from many nations to draw attendees who might also be interested in taking an HIV test or learning more about HIV prevention and care. In addition to HIV testing, the event featured prizes for the cooks.

Fredericksburg: PrEP Education

Fredericksburg (Virginia) Area HIV/AIDS Support Services hosted the LaRumba festival on October 5th to celebrate Latinx culture and to provide the community with free HIV and sexually transmitted infection screenings, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) information, flu shots, vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, brief consults with dentists and nurse practitioners, music, and more.

Albuquerque Offers HIV Testing

The Red Ribbon Youth Pageant in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a local NLAAD event held on October 4th that combined food, entertainment, and a talent-show competition for youth with the opportunity to take an HIV test and to learn about HIV prevention. Community organizations from across New Mexico provided education, raised awareness, and offered testing opportunities for the greater Albuquerque community.
