As our country battles the COVID-19 pandemic, we also continue to make progress toward ending the HIV epidemic in the United States. Dr. Jonathan Mermin, Director, CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD & TB Prevention, recently authored Momentum Against HIV in America, a commentary discussing advances made in reducing HIV-related death rates in the U.S. As Dr. Mermin discussed, a recent CDC study found that the rate of HIV-related deaths in the U.S. fell by nearly half from 2010 to 2017, and that racial and ethnic differences in HIV-related death rates also declined. He emphasized the importance of continuing this progress by sustaining and scaling up the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative which aims to reduce new HIV infections by at least 90% by 2030.
